DESCRIPTION: Following Non-existent Beings Piece is the shadowing of random imaginary beings in Montreal streets. In 1969, performance and conceptual artist Vito Acconci randomly selected and then followed individual passersby he encountered in New York City during 21 days, maintaining his pursuit until the person entered a place he can’t go. The process of Following Piece varied in length from a few minutes to several hours. Though this stalking was aggressive, the artist put himself to the service of this scheme, becoming ‘almost not an I anymore”. Taking the appearance of a person walking in the streets alone with his phone, Following Non-existent Beings Piece is a reinterpretation of the Vito Acconci’s action where the follower ignores each individual passerby and trails non-existent beings.
